Frequently asked questions

General Information

What ages do you accept?
We welcome children ages 2 1/2 through 5 years old.
What are your school hours?
Drop-off is 8:30 AM and pick-up is at 1:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Extended Care is available until 5:00 PM for families who need a longer day.
Do you offer flexible scheduling?
Yes. Our Preschool program is available 2, 3, 4, or 5 days per week. Kinder Prep runs Monday through Friday. Extended Care can be added to either program.
Where are you located?
713 Monterey Boulevard, in San Francisco’s Sunnyside neighborhood. We have been here since 2000, in a building the school community renovated and owns outright.
What is your teacher-to-child ratio?
One teacher for every six children. Our Preschool program has up to 14 children with 3 teachers, and Kinder Prep has up to 10 children with 2 teachers. Our total licensed capacity is 22 children.
Is Wind in the Willows licensed?
Yes. We are a licensed early childhood education program and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operating continuously since 1973.

Philosophy and Curriculum

What is your teaching philosophy?
We believe young children learn best by doing, not sitting. Our approach nurtures the whole child, socially, emotionally, physically, and academically, in a warm and engaging environment where play is the foundation for real learning.
What does “play-based learning” mean?
It means children learn through hands-on experiences, exploration, creativity, and meaningful interactions. Through play, children naturally develop early academic skills, social awareness, emotional regulation, and problem-solving abilities. There are no worksheets or screens.
How do you support social-emotional development?
Through gentle guidance, daily interactions, collaborative play, and supportive classroom experiences. Children build confidence, emotional awareness, empathy, communication skills, and positive relationships at their own pace, with teachers who know them well enough to meet them where they are.
Do children spend time outdoors every day?
Yes. Outdoor play and exploration are part of our daily routine. We follow a rain-or-shine outdoor policy and only stay inside during genuine weather extremes like heavy rain, poor air quality, or unusual heat.

Enrollment and Tuition

How do I schedule a tour?
Contact us by email at info@windinthewillows.org or by phone at (415) 418-0426. We offer tours during regular school hours so you can see a typical day in action.
What is the enrollment process?
After touring the school, families complete an application and enrollment paperwork. A $250 non-refundable enrollment deposit secures your child’s spot. Enrollment is based on availability and program fit.
Is there a waitlist?
At times, certain age groups may have a waitlist. Please contact us for current availability.
Do you offer rolling enrollment?
Yes. Enrollment opportunities may become available throughout the year as openings arise. We do not have a single application deadline.
What are the tuition rates?

Tuition varies depending on your schedule and program. As a nonprofit, we work to keep tuition accessible for San Francisco families. Please contact us for current rates and details.

Daily Life at School

What does a typical day look like?
The day follows a consistent routine that balances structure with freedom: choosing time (child-directed indoor and outdoor activities), group time (music, stories, movement), a healthy snack, outdoor play in our private yard, and a closing circle of stories and songs. Kinder Prep students also have sharing days and activities designed to build kindergarten readiness.
Do children nap at school?
Yes. A quiet rest period is part of each day, giving children time to recharge.
What meals and snacks are provided?
Families provide a morning snack and lunch. Wind in the Willows provides an afternoon snack. We are a nut-free facility, so please keep that in mind when packing food.
How do you help children transition into school?
We work closely with each family to create a gentle, supportive transition. Our teachers help children feel safe, comfortable, and confident in their new environment at whatever pace works for them.

Communication with Families

How do teachers communicate with parents?
Through daily conversations at pick-up and drop-off, email, and Brightwheel, our school communication app. You will always know how your child’s day went.
Do you send daily updates or photos?
Yes. Families receive updates and photos through Brightwheel that give you a window into your child’s day and classroom experiences.
How are behavioral concerns handled?
With patience, consistency, and guidance. Teachers help children build problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, and positive social interactions. We partner closely with families so everyone is on the same page.
How can families participate in school life?
Families are encouraged to join special events, volunteer in the classroom, lead art or reading activities, and attend community gatherings throughout the year. Parent involvement is a big part of what makes Wind in the Willows feel like a second home.

Health and Safety

What is your sick policy?
Children who are ill or showing signs of a contagious illness should stay home to help keep everyone healthy. We follow standard guidelines for when children can return to school.
What happens if my child gets injured at school?
Appropriate care is provided immediately, and families are notified right away. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified.
How do you handle allergies?
We work closely with families to understand each child’s allergy needs and maintain a safe environment. Wind in the Willows is a nut-free facility.

Community and Events

Do you host family events?
Yes. We host community events throughout the year, including seasonal celebrations, playdates, picnics, and gatherings that bring families together beyond the school day.
What are your summer programs like?

Our summer camp runs four themed weeks in June with hands-on activities, outdoor play, art, water play, games, and plenty of fun. It is open to current students and community families. Visit our Summer Camp page for details.

How do you celebrate holidays and cultural events?

We celebrate with age-appropriate activities that encourage community, creativity, inclusion, and appreciation for different traditions and cultures. The focus is on bringing children together and honoring the diversity of our school community.

Find the Right Program for Your Child

“Preschool or Kinder Prep?” is one of the most common questions we hear, and there is no wrong answer. Our director is happy to help you think it through based on your child’s age, personality, and what feels right for your family.

The best way to decide is to come see it in person. Tours are available year-round. Watch the kids play, talk to the teachers, and ask every question on your list.
